As part of the Freedom Eurostars Project, which focuses on creating an exoskeleton specifically adapted for patients with Multiple Sclerosis (MS), we have been making significant strides. This project embodies our commitment to co-creation, ensuring that every product is designed with direct input from those who will benefit most.

Recently, our Product Manager, Katlin, led an essential phase of the project involving hands-on co-creation activities at two esteemed clinics—Tech2People in Vienna and Hobbs Rehabilitation in the UK. These visits provided an invaluable opportunity to test our exoskeleton in real-world conditions, collaborate with healthcare professionals, and gather direct feedback from MS patients.

Co-creation process for the Multiple Sclerosis exoskeleton

The co-creation process is the foundation of our development philosophy. Over two days at each clinic, Katlin worked closely with therapists, engineers, and patients to test the device. The aim was not just to observe, but to document detailed feedback and insights that would refine the exoskeleton to better meet the needs of Multiple Sclerosis patients.

At Tech2People, the team collaborated with four dedicated therapists and three patients. These sessions focused on optimizing the gait pattern, discussing therapy goals, harnessing the power of data to make informed treatment decisions, and understanding how technology can enhance rehabilitation outcomes.

At Hobbs Rehabilitation, Katlin engaged with two therapists and seven patients over another set of intensive days. Here, the discussions delved deeper into user experience, exploring innovative approaches such as gamification within the ABLE Care app to improve weight shifting and detect patient fatigue. The dynamic interaction provided crucial insights that will guide future refinements of the device.

Key Learnings for developing an exoskeleton for Multiple Sclerosis

The insights from both clinics were invaluable. Therapists highlighted practical needs, such as adjustability and control modes, as well as the importance of ease of transfer between a wheelchair and the standing position. The feedback on usability and comfort will inform targeted adjustments to improve the patient experience.

Beyond the technical aspects, the emotional and psychological impact of the exoskeleton was also evident. Witnessing patients interact with the device underscored the importance of creating technology that not only restores mobility but also instils confidence and independence. This feedback reinforces our mission to design solutions that align with real-world clinical practices.

What’s Next for the Freedom Project?

These co-creation activities were more than just tests; they were about building a shared vision for the future of Multiple Sclerosis rehabilitation. The input gathered will now be the cornerstone for the next phase of development, focusing on enhancing adaptability, comfort, and clinical efficiency. At ABLE Human Motion, we know that co-creation doesn’t stop at the initial design. It’s an ongoing process that continues until we deliver a product that truly makes a difference.

The journey of the Freedom Eurostars Project is far from over, now we do technical development based on what we learned, then we test those new developments again and in 2026 we do a clinical trial at both clinics Hobbs and Tech2people. Our commitment is to keep working closely with patients and professionals to redefine what’s possible in rehabilitation.

Stay tuned for more updates as we continue on this path. Together, we can transform rehabilitation and improve the lives of people with Multiple Sclerosis.

Contact us if you want to know more or if you like to have a demo of the ABLE Exoskeleton in your clinic!

At ABLE Human Motion, we are driven by the goal of redefining rehabilitation through innovative exoskeletons.
