Alfons Carnicero

Co-founder and CEO

Industrial and Biomedical engineer with experience in the development of medical devices and entrepreneurship, having participated in several acceleration programs. Alfons has worked within the Medtech industry in the areas of product development, R&D, manufacturing, rehab. engineering and biomechanics. He also worked at Institut Guttmann, which facilitates interaction with the center. Alfons is passionate about how new technologies and innovation can help to improve patient’s care.

Alex Garcia

Co-founder and CTO

Automation and Control engineer with experience in motion control, electronics and programming. Alex has worked in fields like automotive, 3D-printing and electronics. These experiences have allowed him to gain deep knowledge on subjects such as communication protocols, control loop design, system integration and agile methodologies. Personally, he finds new technologies and the change they can bring into people’s lives fascinating and he is certainly willing to contribute.

Josep M. Font, PhD

Co-founder and CSO

Josep Maria did his postdoc at the Centre for Intelligent Machines of McGill University (Canada) and is currently Director of the UPC Biomechanical Engineering Lab. He has wide experience in coordinating R&D projects and industrial contracts in the areas of rehabilitation engineering, biomechanics and robotics. He has published 32 articles in international high-impact journals, more than 100 conference papers, has requested 2 patents, and has supervised 3 doctoral theses.

Pau Martínez

R&D Engineer

Industrial engineer with double Master’s degree in Mechanical and Aerospace engineering by the Illinois Institute of Technologies (Chicago, USA). He has worked on a wide range of topics, including research in structural analysis, test-bench design and implementation, actuator characterization and has experience designing estimation algorithms for GPS aircraft safety. This last research led to the publication of his first conference paper in the Institute of Navigation (ION, Virginia, USA) one of the most prestigious publications in the navigation industry.

Jesús de Miguel

Robotics Engineer

Electronics, Robotics and Automation engineer with experience in control techniques, programming and embedded systems. Jesús has a solid academic background which allows him to manage a wide range of tasks. He has a personal interest in innovative technologies that facilitate the improvement of people’s quality of life.

Miller Espinosa

Firmware Engineer

Electronics and Automation engineer with experience in web interfaces development, embedded systems and robotics. Miller is passionate about learning any technological and innovative area. His philosophy is to improve every day and help other members of the team to grow.

Marc Martínez

Mechatronics Engineer

Industrial engineer with experience in designing, programming and developing bio-inspired robotics.

Sylvain Kpekou 

Biomedical Engineer

Biomedical engineer with experience in medical data analysis as well as designing and improving medical equipments. Sylvain has worked on several clinical studies and expresses a great interest for troubleshooting and solving human-in-the-loop type of problems. Sylvain believes in continued  research to seek new technologies to assist with safe and effective product development.

Jorik van Koppen

Biomedical Engineer

Double degree master student in Biomechanical Design and Communication Design for Innovation from the Delft University of Technology. Jorik has a passion for innovation. His interests range from solving complex engineering challenges to finding the ingredients for innovation in a context outside of engineering. Within ABLE, Jorik is making a sidestep towards computing by developing a desktop application that will help the rest of the team with their development process.

Joan Vidal, MD, PhD

CMedO

Medical specialist in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Head of the Spinal Cord Injury Unit at Institut Guttmann Neurorehabilitation Hospital. He is the Spanish representative in the International Spinal Cord Society (ISCOS) and Vice President of the Spanish Society of Paraplegia. His specialties are rehabilitation, treatment of neuropathic pain and spasticity, and physiological adaptation in spinal cord injured. Dr. Vidal coordinates the clinical studies and plays an important role with clinical stakeholders.

Priscila Bonina

Physical Therapist

Physical therapist specialized in neurorehabilitation by the Institut Guttmann. She has experience as a neurological therapist and as a clinical researcher in the robotics rehabilitation field. Deeply interested in innovative technologies and their applications to improve the rehabilitation process of neurological patients, she brings clinical support to the team. Priscila tests and validates new product features in patients to assess usability, ergonomics and safety, ensuring a user-centered approach.

Paolo Bonato, PhD

Exoskeletons Advisor

Paolo serves as Director of the Motion Analysis Lab. at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital (Boston, USA). He is an Associate Prof. in the Dept. of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Harvard Medical School, an Adjunct Prof. at the MGH Institute of Health Professions and an Associate Faculty Member at the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering. His research work is focused on the development of rehabilitation technologies with special emphasis on wearable technology and robotics. Dr. Bonato served as the Founding Editor-in-Chief of Journal on NeuroEngineering and Rehabilitation. Dr. Bonato’s work has received approximately 7.000 citations.

John Collins, PhD

Strategic Advisor

John serves as Chief Operating Officer (COO) at Consortia for Improving Medicine with Innovation & Technology (CIMIT, Boston, USA). John is a tested leader in technology-driven businesses with more than 25 years of hands-on, international experience in creating value by identifying business opportunities and accelerating the development and commercialization of innovative products and services. Broad industrial, geographic, and technological experience in medical devices in North America and Asia.

Bart Huisken, MBA

Business Development Advisor

Bart is a serial entrepreneur in IoT and SaaS. He worked at Ericsson in the Netherlands, Australia and Sweden in the areas of product management, innovation, marketing, sales, and product design. He founded SouthWing in 2000 at the INSEAD Business School in Fontainebleau, France. This has given him a thorough understanding of the dynamics of the market and the importance of strategic partnerships. He has also been on the board of two Barcelona based Venture Capital firms.

Elena Canetti, MBA

Healthcare Advisor

Elena is Co-Managing Partner at Inveniam Group (Israel). She is expert in Technology Transfer, including technical evaluation, licensing processes, management and implementation. She brings years of experience with technology commercialization in international markets, having completed hundreds of license and research deals to date, in the hi-tech, pharmaceutical and chemicals industries.

Marc Vila, MBA

Technological Advisor

Marc has proven experience of more than 15 years in entrepreneurship, technology and hardware. Currently, General Manager at INGENIA Motion Control, a company dedicated to the science of motion control since 2006 that produce solutions for complex, high-tech applications. Due to that, Marc has developed a deep understanding of the robotic, industrial automation and medical devices markets.

Joan Lobo, PhD

R&D Advisor

Joan is a researcher on rehabilitation and assistive devices at the Institut de Robòtica i Informàtica Industrial (CSIC-UPC). His work focuses on the development and clinical evaluation of assistive and rehabilitation technology for people with neuromuscular disorders. He worked as an R&D Engineer at Focal Meditech (The Netherlands), a leading company in assistive technology. Joan also worked with Prof. David Reinkensmeyer as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the BioRobotics Lab, University of California Irvine (USA).
