Clinical Evaluation Specialist

Location: Barcelona, Spain (immediate incorporation)

Employment type: Full-time, permanent contract

Working model: Hybrid, up to 2 remote-working days per week

Position Overview

We are looking for a Clinical Evaluation Specialist to join our Clinical and Regulatory team and support the generation and maintenance of clinical evidence for our medical devices.

The main focus of the position will be Clinical Evaluation activities under the EU Medical Device Regulation (MDR), including the preparation and maintenance of Clinical Evaluation Plans (CEP), Clinical Evaluation Reports (CER), literature reviews and related clinical documentation.

The role will work closely with senior Clinical and Regulatory team members and will progressively develop greater autonomy in Clinical Evaluation activities.

Key Responsabilities

Clinical Evidence:

  • Support the preparation and maintenance of CEP & CER in accordance with MDR.
  • Perform structured literature searches and critically appraise scientific/clinical evidence.
  • Support the assessment of clinical data from literature, clinical investigations, PMCF, PMS and other post-market sources.
  • Contribute to State-of-the-Art assessments, treatment alternatives and similar medical devices.
  • Ensure consistency between clinical evidence, intended purpose, product claims, risk management and Technical Documentation.
  • Support responses to Notified Body questions related to Clinical Evaluation and clinical evidence.
  • Keep up to date with relevant MDR requirements, MDCG guidance and applicable standards.
  • Occasionally support the review of PMCF, PMS and post-market clinical data.

Provide occasional support to ongoing clinical investigations, including:

  • Preparation of study reports and clinical evidence summaries.
  • Preparation and maintenance of study documentation.
  • Submissions to Ethics Committees and Competent Authorities.
  • Coordination with investigators and participating centres.
  • Review, cleaning and analysis of clinical study data.

 

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering, Biomedical Sciences, Life Sciences, Health Sciences or a related scientific or engineering discipline.
  • 1–2 years of experience with medical devices, Clinical Affairs, Regulatory Affairs, clinical research or a related field.
  • Previous exposure to Clinical Evaluation activities, CERs, CEPs and/or systematic or structured literature reviews.
  • Basic understanding of Clinical Evaluation under MDR.
  • Strong analytical, scientific writing and critical appraisal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with multidisciplinary teams.
  • High attention to detail and good organisational skills.
  • Good communication skills in English and Spanish.

 

Nice to have

  • Knowledge of MEDDEV 2.7/1 Rev. 4 and relevant MDCG guidance.
  • Familiarity with ISO 14155 and clinical investigations of medical devices.
  • Experience with Ethics Committee or Competent Authority submissions.
  • Experience with statistical analysis of clinical study data.
  • Knowledge of Class IIa or Class IIb medical devices.
  • Interest in rehabilitation technologies, robotics or neurorehabilitation.

Robotics Software Engineer – ROS2 (PhD required)

Location: Barcelona, Spain (incorporation in January 2027)

Position Overview:

ABLE Human Motion’s R&D team is seeking a Robotics Software Engineer to contribute to the development of advanced control and software technologies for our robotic exoskeletons.

Responsabilities

  • Support the transition from an embedded Python system to a ROS2-based architecture, from high-level design to implementation and validation.
  • Design and implement new control strategies and functionalities for robotic lower-limb exoskeletons.
  • Define and promote ROS2 best practices, including node architecture, communication patterns, lifecycle management, and deployment strategies.
  • Contribute to the definition of robust software maintenance and scalability strategies, including modularity, testing, and long-term maintainability.
  • Design and implement testing strategies using simulation environments to validate control and system behavior.
  • Participate in research projects related to Reinforcement Learning applied to robotic systems, particularly through simulation-based approaches.
  • Contribute to code reviews, technical documentation and software development processes.
  • Collaborate closely with multidisciplinary teams (control, mechanical design, clinical partners, physiotherapists).

Requirements

  • Completed PhD in Robotics, Control Engineering, Computer Science or a closely related field.
  • At least 3 years of professional or research hands-on experience developing robotic systems using ROS 2 beyond just academic/simulation work.
  • Strong programming skills in modern C++ and Python.
  • Strong understanding of software architecture in robotic systems.
  • Experience with Git and modern development workflows, including CI/CD.
  • Familiarity with motion-control communication protocols such as CANOpen or EtherCAT, as well as general communication protocols (SPI, I2C, UART, etc.).
  • Legal authorisation to work in Spain.

Nice to have

  • Familiarity with software development in regulated/safety-critical environments (e.g. IEC 62304, ISO 13485).
  • Experience working with Raspberry Pi or similar embedded computing platforms.
  • Experience using Docker in robotics or embedded systems.
  • Hands-on experience with robot simulation environments (e.g., Gazebo, Ignition, or similar).
  • Experience applying or researching Reinforcement Learning in robotics.
  • A strong Maker / DIY mindset — you enjoy building, experimenting, and bringing ideas to life.

Industrial PhD Position – Reinforcement Learning for Wearable Robotics

Location: Barcelona, Spain (Expected start in 2027)

Academic partner: Institut de Robòtica i Informàtica Industrial (IRI, CSIC-UPC)

Duration: 4 years (Industrial PhD – subject to funding approval through the Spanish Industrial Doctorates programme)

About Us: ABLE Human Motion develops next-generation robotic exoskeletons to improve gait rehabilitation for people with neurological impairments. The ABLE Exoskeleton is a CE-marked medical device already deployed in rehabilitation hospitals across Europe, providing a unique opportunity to develop and validate cutting-edge robotics algorithms on a real clinical product.

Research project

We are seeking an outstanding PhD candidate to develop the next generation of intelligent control algorithms for lower-limb robotic exoskeletons using Reinforcement Learning.

The project will be carried out jointly between ABLE Human Motion and the Institut de Robòtica i Informàtica Industrial (IRI CSIC-UPC), one of Europe’s leading robotics research institutes.

The objective is to develop adaptive locomotion and navigation algorithms capable of operating safely in both structured clinical environments and unstructured real-world settings.

Research topics include:

  • Reinforcement Learning for locomotion control
  • Safe Reinforcement Learning for physical human-robot interaction
  • Sim-to-real transfer
  • Human intention detection
  • Adaptive gait assistance
  • Robot navigation and obstacle avoidance
  • Biomechanical modelling of human-exoskeleton interaction

 

The developed algorithms will be validated both in simulation and on commercial robotic exoskeletons with real users.

Candidate profile

We are looking for highly motivated candidates with:

  • MSc in Robotics, Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science, Control Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or related fields
  • Strong programming skills (Python and C++)
  • Experience with Reinforcement Learning or Machine Learning
  • Robotics background, especially in motion control techniques such as optimal control or motion planning.
  • Experience with ROS/ROS2 is highly valued
  • Experience with simulation environments (Isaac Sim, MuJoCo or similar) is a plus
  • Strong mathematical background
  • Excellent English communication skills
