In May 2024, 15-year-old Marc Roma, son of Dakar Rally driver Nani Roma and Rosa Romero, also a professional racer, suffered a complete spinal cord injury after a serious motocross accident in Galicia. The accident left him without mobility in his legs.
During his rehabilitation at the Institut Guttmann, Marc tried the ABLE Exoskeleton, a robotic exoskeleton designed for gait rehabilitation in individuals with neurological conditions. This was the first time since the accident that Marc was able to stand up and walk again.
Marc and his family are using their personal experience to raise awareness about the need for greater accessibility to these technologies for people with mobility impairments, as well as advocating for public healthcare systems to adopt them to enhance patient rehabilitation.
